What’s new in FM27: eight changes that matter.
Tactical Effectiveness changes the feedback loop. Training changes the week. Tactical Tweaks change the match. Here is the full FM27 feature picture, without the marketing fog.

FM27 new features at a glance
Sports Interactive has framed Football Manager 27 as an evolution rather than a reset. The Unity-era presentation remains, but several systems inside it have been rebuilt to connect decisions that used to feel separate. The most important changes are:
The marketing story is “greater control”. The practical story is that FM27 asks you to be more deliberate. A tactic can be tactically clever and still fail because the players do not understand it. A training plan can look intense and still leave the team underprepared for the next opponent. The new interface gives you more feedback, but it also makes the trade-offs harder to ignore.
1. Tactical Effectiveness: the plan meets the squad
Tactical Effectiveness replaces the old familiarity model with a broader measure of execution. It is built on four areas: Tactical Understanding, Player Ability, Player Buy In and Next Match Information. The gauges appear in tactics, training and recruitment, so the same feedback follows a player from the scouting report to the starting XI.
The companion system is Tactical Complexity, a measure of how many team, player and opposition instructions you are layering onto the plan. A low-complexity system may be easier to learn and deliver quickly, while a detailed system has a higher ceiling and a slower learning curve. Lower- league squads may struggle with a relentless, instruction-heavy press; elite players can handle more.
This is why “copy this tactic” is an incomplete answer to FM27. The same shape may perform differently because your No.6 cannot pass under pressure, your winger does not buy into the defensive brief, or your team has not trained the pressing trigger. Our Tactical Effectiveness guide explains each gauge and how to improve it.
2. Training: built around the next match
Training moves into FM27’s primary navigation and is rebuilt around match preparation rather than only attribute development. Senior training focuses on team cohesion, tactical understanding and the specific behaviours you need for the next fixture. You can train a high press, a low block or a build-up pattern, then see the effect on your effectiveness gauges.
The interface supports copying and pasting weekly plans again, and it forecasts player load across the weeks ahead rather than just the current week. Individual training still handles long-term player growth, which creates a genuine tension for a manager: do you spend the week preparing for Saturday or accelerating a wonderkid’s development?
International managers can also create training plans during a camp. That is a welcome addition for tournament saves, where contact time is short and the next match is decisive. Our FM27 training guide includes a sample week.
3. Tactical Tweaks and rebuilt Shouts
Tactical Tweaks let you change the game from the touchline without opening the full tactics screen. Team-level examples include more urgency, longer passing, exploiting width or reducing the press. Individual tweaks include swapping wingers or sending the goalkeeper forward for a late set piece. Tweaks stay active until you remove them, and staff can alert you when a change might be needed.
The important design detail is that the opposition manager is making changes too. The dugout feed highlights tactical shifts and recommends responses, turning the match into a live problem rather than a passive simulation. Shouts have also been rebuilt with clearer explanations and more individual body- language reactions. They now affect player mentality rather than serving as a generic attribute buff.
The practical risk is over-managing. A tweak is not a magic button. If the underlying shape is structurally exposed, adding urgency can make the problem worse. Read our match engine guide before you spend 90 minutes flicking switches.
4. A more physical match engine
FM27’s match engine work focuses on how players move and how defending actually feels. Using its partnership with Hawk-Eye, Sports Interactive has introduced more varied running and off-ball animations, plus skill moves tied to Flair and Dribbling. Acceleration has been recalibrated so defenders no longer teleport back into position, and new jockeying animations make one-v-one defending more of a contest.
Stamina matters more. It influences repeated sprint capacity, recovery and condition loss through 90 minutes. That gives substitutes a larger role and makes a high press a genuine squad-building decision, not just a tactical instruction. Attackers have also been given more detailed box instructions, including near-post, far-post and central runs. Smarter players should make better decisions, while disconnected teams may waste runs.
The 2D match view and data tools receive upgrades as well. Heat maps and pass maps return, alongside a refreshed Data Hub and adaptive matchday tiles. If you like watching the shape rather than the 3D render, this is a meaningful quality-of-life improvement.
5. Matchday atmosphere
Stadiums, crowds and pre-match presentation are more detailed. New cutscenes, improved lighting and local environment detail give each fixture more theatre. You can also customise more of the matchday UI, including tile layouts. These are presentation changes rather than tactical mechanics, but they matter in a game where the match is the emotional payoff for a week of planning.
The visual upgrade is not a reason to buy FM27 on its own. It is, however, part of a broader design direction: make the match feel like a stage for your decisions instead of a spreadsheet with a ball.
6. Cup Draws, Transfer Deadline Day and a smarter news feed
The wider football world returns to the foreground. Cup Draws are back, with a more broadcast-aware presentation, and Transfer Deadline Day is designed to capture the compressed chaos of the final hours of a window. A reworked news feed connects those events to your club and the rest of the football ecosystem.
These features are not cosmetic if you play long saves. They create narrative checkpoints, make the calendar feel alive and give the recruitment team more context. Our transfer guide covers how to prepare for deadline day without panicking.
7. Clearer interface, manager identity and accessibility
FM27’s interface is designed to reduce clicks and put key decisions in front of you. You can choose your landing screen, customise tiles, use labelled bookmarks and adapt the layout to your monitor. The matchday screen is more flexible, and the training and recruitment areas inherit the same logic.
Manager creation expands self-expression, from appearance to the club you support, and newgen players have more distinct visual details. Accessibility options continue to improve, including wheelchair representation in the manager creator and adjustable UI scaling. These changes will not make or break a tactic, but a game you can comfortably read for hundreds of hours is a better game.
8. Shuffle Draft multiplayer
Shuffle Draft is a fast-paced multiplayer mode developed with FIFAe. It puts squad building at the centre of a shared competition: players draft from sets, make picks and then take their squads into matches. It is a real departure from the long-form solo save and a clear attempt to offer an FM experience that fits a shorter session.
The mode’s reception will depend on matchmaking, draft balance and how clearly it explains squad fit. For now, treat it as an additional way to play rather than a replacement for the career mode.
The new licensed competitions
FM27 adds the ROSHN Saudi League and Arkema Première Ligue as fully licensed leagues. The official licence list also includes the Premier League, EFL, Bundesliga, La Liga club partnerships, Serie A clubs, Ligue 1, MLS, the J1 League, K League and more. We keep the full list on the FM27 licences page, including what is and is not covered.
FM27 feature FAQ
What is the biggest new feature in FM27?
Tactical Effectiveness is the headline system. It measures how well your squad understands and can execute your tactical plan across four areas, then links that feedback to training, scouting and recruitment.
Is Shuffle Draft available at launch?
Shuffle Draft is the new multiplayer mode developed with FIFAe. It is part of the FM27 feature set; availability can vary by platform and edition, so check your storefront and in-game mode list at launch.
Are Cup Draws and Transfer Deadline Day back in FM27?
Yes. Sports Interactive has confirmed the return of Cup Draws and Transfer Deadline Day, with a reworked news feed designed to make the wider football calendar feel more alive.
Does FM27 have a new match engine?
FM27 upgrades the existing match engine rather than replacing it wholesale. The changes include more realistic acceleration, a stronger stamina model, new jockeying and skill animations, better box attacking and new Player Instructions.
